Selena Gomez Became the Most Followed Woman on Instagram, Then Announced a Social Media Break

Hours after Selena Gomez passed Kylie Jenner as the most followed woman on Instagram, the actress announced she would be taking a break from social media.

Selena Gomez announces on TikTok live that she’s taking a break from social media:

“I’m gonna be taking a second from social media cause this is a little silly and I’m 30. I’m too old for this.” pic.twitter.com/rJ7WvjOPEA

During a TikTok live, Gomez shared that she is very happy with her life but needs to step back from social media.

“I’m very happy,” Gomez said. “I’m so blessed. I have the best friends, the best fans in the whole world. And I just couldn’t be happier. I’m good. I love who I am, I don’t care. I’m big, I’m not, I don’t care. I love who I am.

“And yeah, I’m going to be taking a second from social media because this is a little silly,” she continued. “I’m 30. I’m too old for this. But I love you guys so much! I will see you guys sooner than later, but I’m just going to take a break from everything.”

Gomez’s comments were a bit vague, but for the past few days she’s been fielding comments from social media users about her appearance after she posted a TikTok saying she “wished she was as pretty as [model] Bella Hadid.”

Users quickly began pitting Gomez and Hadid against one another, and things turned sour.

Seemingly in response to the hate, Gomez shared she would be taking a break from social media altogether.

This isn’t the first time she’s stepped away. Gomez has a history of taking breaks from social media to prioritize her mental health.

“I haven’t been on the Internet in four and a half years,” Gomez told Good Morning America last year. “It has changed my life completely. I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal.”

It seems like Gomez is once again putting her happiness above an Instagram post — setting a good reminder for all of us that nothing on social media is worth sacrificing our mental health.
